Book review

#1 Post by channel12 »

I very recently bought the book by Brett Gibbons which gives an in depth account of the Waltham Abbey production processes the produce what was the worlds best black powder for British military muzzle loading rifles. Brett being an American anglophile also details his attempts to replicate historically correct powder for his Pattern 53. There's also more information than you probably need on the actual science of black powder deflagration v grain size.

Brett has also written The Destroying Angel, an account of the impact of the Pattern 51 rifle musket in the Crimean War.

And his other book The English cartridge on the bullet and paper cartridge which was perfected to work so well with Pattern 53 and which the Confederate Army imported in bulk from Birmingham to use in their imported Enfield rifles and was superior to the Union made cartridges.

Brett also has a youtube channel, one video has a side by side comparison of loading a Springfield vs loading an Enfield using period correct cartridges.

Unfortunately his books are only available through Amazon, free delivery if you sign up for Prime and then remember to cancel your membership once the books are delivered so you don't pay the monthly membership fee.
