Cannon anyone?

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

We spent a happy hour at the range testing this, it fires a patched lead ball at just under .700" and I started with 60 grains of coarse BP and dropped to 50 grains fairly quickly with this result. Accuracy wise at 25m it was punching holes in a 3 shot group of around 5" courtesy of a tame ex FOO who got into the spirit of things and sighted it in we used my iFone as a clinometer in the absence of sights.

I keep looking at the miniature cannons in the Henry Krank catalogue. They are seriously tempting.

While Ovenpaa was firing the cannon I sweet talked a fellow shooter to let me try his HK something or other .22 semi auto, it made me smile, nothing beats firing 20 rounds in no time.

The one we shot was a new Kranks Old Ironside Cannon, I think it was marked as Ardessa or similar.

IainWR, yes I would be interested to find out what is being shot miniature cannon wise :)

MLAGB (www.mlagb.com) have a Miniature Cannon National Championship and run a postal league.

I shoot my old 0.70" Jukar (now the Ardessa Napoleon III) regularly. Like all smooth bores they like to be driven hard for best accuracy. I use a 0.690" ball in a 0.010" dry lubed linen patch seated on tow over 70 gns of Swiss 2ff and Swiss Nothing B in the touch hole.

They are very accurate once you get the hang of the "lack of sight" picture, and mine will hold the 9 ring, obliterating the 10 ring on a PL12 target at 50 yards when I do my bit. I use felt tip pen marks on the trunion aligned with marks on its capture plate for repeatable elevations, they are great fun at the longer distances really showing up how good your sight picture memory is.
