SGC 9mm - Catastorphic Failure - Almost lost an eye :(

#1 Post by phaedra1106 »

Yes it's that bad ****

Gun needs to be returned as it just failed and almost took my eye out.

Was half way through a second mag of PPU 9mm 115gr when after firing a shot the pull slide flew up towards my face and on inspection the alloy around the rear fixing pin has failed.

I am to say the least very shaken as this could have easily been fatal.

I'm about to ring Roger Bill Shooting Supplies to see where we go from here :cool2:

Jesus,

Glad you are reasonably OK, sounds like the last thing you need.

I have just cleaned mine and put it away, I think I will get it out again and check this are over.

I don't fully understand how the bolt caught the charging handle and forced it back, or did the frame fail first and the CH just flew up because there was nothing holding it?

Regards

Bloody hell. Glad you're not injured! Silver lining? Send it back for a full refund, this thing has been more trouble than a kick in the balls!

Holy...!!!

Glad to see you're okay... Man! I'm really glad I stayed clear of these things... they really do seem to be a lot of hassle!

Just got off the phone with the supplier and he's getting on to SGC to see what can be sorted.

I think (not sure) that the frame failed and threw the top up sending the charging handle flying, luckily I had a scope rail riser on so my head was a bit further over out of the way.

That looks bad and it sounds like you were very lucky, were you wearing shooting glasses at the time? There are so many variables that could have caused this, stress corrosion, material failure, cleaning routine, load and type of bullet and no I am not suggesting in any way that you were pushing the envelope with your loads as it certainly does not sound like it based on your previous posts.

Whatever caused it this is a catastrophic material failure and I would certainly be thinking twice about shooting one without a thorough examination of the area that failed first.

I believe that this rifle is less than 6 months old - you would have to be going some to cause this kind of damage so quickly, and I am sure that the round count will still be in the hundreds not the thousands.

Just checked mine over and all is OK at the moment,

Saw Dangermouse this morning, playing with his black thing (9mm)

Told him I had been thinking of getting one and didn't.

Glad you are ok, and hope that for others sake, it isn't a fault in other guns!

It's only about 5 weeks old, got on March 1st, I've checked my reloading records and I've loaded 505 rounds with 245 still in the ammo safe so 271 rounds including the 16 factory this afternoon.

Gun was fully cleaned and lubed as normal, I always run a couple of clean patches through the bore before taking it out and it shot ten rounds from first mag and five from the second mag perfectly until the failure.

Will have to wait and see what Roger Bill/SGC come back with, the chap I spoke to at Roger Bills was very upset (I emaild pics) and has promised to get it sorted. To be honest if I hadn't invested in so much kit for it I don't think I'd want it back.

I wear polycarbonate glasses so was safe that way, it's just sinking in now how lucky I was, could have been much worse.
