There will be another shotgun festival held at Bisley in February 2012, this will be a mixture of shot and will also require slug - should you be able to attend a good time will be had and will give you the reason you require for the slug.
I think it perfectly reasonable for you to have slug if you have a Sec1 shotgun, I am assuming that you listed "target" as a reason for wanting one. I would suggest giving your FET a call and admit that you had not realised/forgot when initially getting the FAC and see what they say.

Should you be under Surrey, they know the target shotgun set up very well and I have never had a problem - they have even granted me permission to have 2 Sec1 shotguns as I said that I needed them set up differently,

I think it's what one's Police force is like generally towards guns and how they view one.

I followed your advice to great effect and got all that I wanted on my open ticket.

Semi auto 410... :shakeshout: :shakeshout: :shakeshout:

I wish. 8-)
I'm honoured, but I can't for life of me remember what I said!

Regarding slug, hopefully with the NRA endorsing Target Shotgun the use of slug will become more prevalent.

Grampian may have given me slug for Target Shotgun but not for fox!

I enjoyed using 410 slug :shakeshout: but it was really a home loading job as getting 410 slug was nigh on impossible sign01 - one of the reasons why I gave up my SGC, that and no longer being able to do any fieldwork.

While we are on the subject of shotgun slug - where does a rifle shotgun barrel fit into UK laws?

For example, if I requested a rifled shotgun barrel for say, 20 gauge, would I ask for a 20 gauge rifle or a rifle in .615 ( or by 3 inch) or 15.5x76mm?

Any thoughts?

A rifled barrel would fit into section 5 if fitted to a pump action or semi-auto shotgun Sandgroper. The same applies to rifled chokes fitted to pumps and autos.

I was told by someone who inquired with Cambs Police that this is a definette no no.

We all know self loading and pump action rifles greater than 22lr are banned so the moment you stick a rifled barrel onto a shotgun it automatically becomes a prohibited weapon due to not being a rimfire.Rifled chokes however are a grey area because on one hand they're not permanetly attached to the gun,but could be considered part of the barrel as they're attached. The only way you could get around it would be to use a single or double barrel shotgun with rifled barrels, but it would automatically be S1 due to no longer being smoothbore.

I didn't really word my query all that well, but thats essentially what I was refering to - if you fitted a rifled shotgun barrel to a shotgun it then becomes a rifle that fires shotgun slugs.

So, if you then had a S1 rifle that fired solid shotgun ammunition (slugs), do you still ask for slug ammunition on your FAC even though it would really be firearm and not shotgun ammunition?

Hope that makes more sense! :G

As it doesn't fall under any of the 5 exemptions I listed earlier, you ask for it on your FAC (NOT your SGC) because it is Section 1 Ammunition. What you call it is irrelevant provided you define it adequately, and your supplier accepts the terminology used as something he can supply against. So the obvious place to go for wording is the person you intend to buy slug from.

Incidentally, this gives rise to a particularly bizarre unintended consequence in the Firearms Act. Suppose you came to Bisley as an NRA member, and wanted to shoot Target Shotgun without slug on your FAC. If you do it with a S2 shotgun, we can't sell you slug, because slug is S1. If you do it with a S1 shotgun because it is pump-action or semi-auto, we can't sell you slug because S15 of the 1988 Act doesn't apply to shotguns. But if you turn up with a rifled O/U shotgun, which legally is a rifle, we can sell you slug because S15 applies. But if you turn up with a rifled pump or semi-auto, we have to call the police because you are holding a S5 weapon.
