Custom 308
I am considering building a custom .308. I have been looking at the build options and the builders!
Has anyone any experience of the Rimfire Magic Remy 700 based builds?

Re: Custom 308
Whilst I have had great fun tricking up a Remington 700 myself, I have no knowledge of Rimfire's builds.
I would say that I have sourced several parts from them and they are a really good UK supplier.

Re: Custom 308
Sendit,
I have purchased a .308 SPS Varmint from Roger, with a Rifle Basix trigger and SYSS 20MOA rail.
I also bought a custom 10/22 a few years a go and it has given me many hours of fun both in competition and just plinking.
The .308 shoots as good as I can, but is held back by the 26" barrel when shooting at 900 yards +. I will be having it barrelled over Christmas with a 32" Border Barrels 5R job.
Roger has always given me lots of time and at times can be difficult to get of the phone. If you make genuine enquiries via email he always replies.
Recently I suspected my 20MOA rail was too wide and would not accept my Warne rings. The same day of emailing him he replied to say that he was sending down another (he made no mention of sending back the original - I did). The replacement arrived within 2 days and was a good one.
Most dealers would not have gotten back to me in that time, Roger is an exception.
Having said all that...
What do you want to do with the rifle and how much do you have to spend?
In total I will have spent near £2000 on what is at the end of a day a Remi 700, and if you look on Guntrader you will see that not many sell for over a grand. Possibly better to go for a fully customised job.

Re: Custom 308
More experience of their after sales service than the actual build. Guy in the club ordered one right after passing his DSC1 - rem 700 action, AI clone stock, trigger , etc...you get the picture. Anyway, he's the type that never bloody learns and is forever moaning about how this or that rifle is a lemon - can never seem to group and its never him at fault.Sendit wrote:Has anyone any experience of the Rimfire Magic Remy 700 based builds?
Anyway, a while later and he brings the new rifle complete with moderator to one of the range days of the South West Scotland branch of the British Deer Society. His arse is making buttons and he immediately heads for the firing point, slaps the moderator on and is straining at the bit to fire. I stood behind him so saw how once cleared to fire, there's a loud bang and i watch his rifle flip up as his moderator heads 30yds down range. He turned in surprise to show us how his scope had bit him badly on the nose.
Anyway, the point is despite the fact that he admitted that the moderator had previously mounted fine and tight he insisted that the build was at fault. Everyone knew that he'd crossed the threads in his desperation to be first to fire - even the ripped threads on the barrel proved so but he just wouldn't admit his fault. He started moaning and calling the riflesmith all manner of s*** but credit to him, the smith arranged for the rifle and moderator to be taken back, fixed in only a week or so and immediately returned. All credit to him as i'd have told John (the rifle owner) to bugger off and grow a few brain cells.
Re: Custom 308
Thank you for the replies everyone. It seems that RM have a fairly good reputation to match their ad blerb, etc. I will give them a call and have a chat!
The .308 is for long range target and stalking, its a compromise, ideally for stalking I would go with 30-06 but because I want to use it at Bisley and .308 is the nominal limit without dispensation then seems to be a happy medium. saves buying two more rifles when I would rather save for the future and go for .338 Lap Mag PGM machine for long distance target.
I am just trying to gauge the experiences of others, no matter which supplier or maker you choose if you take your wallet in they will build you what you want I guess?
I've set a budget of £1500 to £2000 but I have always bought second hand before, this will be the first new Rifle I have considered.
Thanks again!

Re: Custom 308
Sendit, waving a wallet usually gets people attention and I am sure you can get some decent deals at this time of year. Also I would still look around and see what is on the used market for the rifle and/or 'scope. All of my 'scopes were second hand which means some reasonable savings and (touch wood) no issues. Just look carefully at what you are buying.
Good luck with the rifle choice.

I agree, my philosophy to date has always been to buy the best glass I can afford and strap a rifle under it so I will look at a tried and tested method but just fancied a Chrissy present to selfovenpaa wrote:Sendit, waving a wallet usually gets people attention and I am sure you can get some decent deals at this time of year.
