Proberly a dumb question but what calibre is it

It's a 303, the original design was for 303 but the Americans also adopted the rifle as they were short of springfields. That variant is called the p17 and is chambered in 30-06

The American 30-06 version was actually called the M(model)17.

The British version was the P(pattern)14.

The British were looking to replace the Lee Enfield with a Mauser actioned rifle after the debacle of the Boer War and the success of the Mauser in other theatres like the Spanish American conflict which led to the development of the Springfield '03.

The Pattern 13 (chambered for a new .276 rimless cartridge) was intended to replace the SMLE. The first world war intervened with its development, the Lee Enfield action was seen to be better than the Mauser in 20th century battle conditions and the rest as they say is history.

You put in for a 303, and want to know about Mauser prices?

The P14 IS a mauser type action, but not marketed as such.

Want to get an idea of prices - several UK selling sites that will give you an idea

I'd definitely say MONEY SPENT ON BOOKS FIRST is seldom money wasted.
PlanZ would be to research online.
Have a think on what period/era you want to base your shooting/collecting on, THEN do more detailed research, THEN go armed with your new FAC & a wad of SalmondPoonds to your nearest emporium...
AND
Don't buy the first 303 you see. Try to get to a supplier that has a few in stock & examine them thoroughly. IF you know someone already used to such things, take them along

A good PlanC (once you've got the 303 FAC slot & done some research) would be to nip across to the MetroCentre & drop your better half off there for half a days shopping. While swmbo is otherwise distracted, drive 5 minutes down the road to check out the gunroom at MaisonDromia.
He may even make you a cuppa while you have a look at a few good rifles

Sorry i ment was thinking about it.my research was throwing up very varied prices,so was looking for a educated ball park figure.thanks for the above advice.as to not derail the thread anymore can anyone one else who wishes to give me some pointers do it by pm.thanks
