Lube my balls..!

#1 Post by Steve »

As an experiment after a conversation with a friend-i tried lubing some lead balls for my Uberti 44 (Remington copy).

Distance-25mtrs
Powder-Blackpowder-17grains
Filler-Ground rice
Primer-Remington
Ball-454 (homecast)
Lubricant-Lee Alox
Topped off with Co-ops finest lard!

and after 6 shots i never hit the A4 sheet of paper once.So reloaded and tried again and missed again! Switched back to the unlubed balls and they were much better where i was actually hitting the paper. The lubed ones seemed to be erratic despite using same amount of powder.

Now,i'll be the first to admit im crap with pistols and i really ought to be shooting at a 6ft target at 25mtrs,but i did think lubed balls would be more accurate.

Oh well, atleast it made you smile reading about me lubing my balls.

Not with Alox you won't.

It is not a good idea to use petroleum based lubes with blackpowder as it mixes with fouling to form a hard tarry build up especially in the forcing cone which promptly sizes down your balls and the revolvers as well.

It is also a bugger to clean.

If the alox was applied sparing and thinned at least 50.50 with white spirit as it should be then with a few rounds it might not do much harm.

With a good lathering of lard then you don't need any more lubricant, lead in itself is a lubricant they used to put it in petrol.

With a good fitting ball at the pistols preferred velocity, with all the 44s I've had they all liked to be driven full stoke, then in the black at 25yrds shouldn't be a problem if the shooter does their bit.

Thats where it all goes wrong.

I've tried different loads all the way upto 35grains,but its like a movie scene with a huge flash and smoke which makes it look like im on fire...and it still isnt any more accurate.

How many grains do you use?

As much as I can get in and still seat the ball and allow the cylinder to cycle. I like to have the ball compress the powder when I seat it, you should hear the grains crunch as you work the lever.

No,always unrested.

The most i can get in the cylinder is 35grains which when you fire does look a spectacular so i guess i ought to keep at this amount and get more practice.

Its best to develop your load sitting pistol hands rested on a sandbag or such like, that minimises shooter error and lets you know that the gun is shooting OK, at the moment you don't know if its you, the gun, the load all three or permutations thereof that is missing the target so work up your loads rested so that you know what your pistol can do and what it likes best, then when you miss the target you can blame yourself.

As I said work up loads as you would a cartridge for your rifle, your pistol might prefer mouse fart loadings that just lob your balls into the black all day.
